Episode 136: Matte Wilson on Indigenous Food Sovereignty

The Checkout speaks with Matte Wilson of Sicangu CDC about food sovereignty and community organizing on the Rosebud Reservation and how these lessons are applicable anywhere.

https://sicangucdc.org/story Sicangu CDC is a nonprofit organization serving the Sicangu (see-CHAHN-ghoo) Lakota Oyate (oh-YAH-tay). The name "Sicangu" means "burnt-thigh" in our native Lakota language, and we live on the land that is now known as the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. Generally speaking, "Lakota" and "Sioux" both refer to the larger Nation of which we are a part; however "Sioux" is a name given by outsiders. We proudly claim Sicangu Lakota as our name and our identity. Genocide was committed against the Indigenous people living on Turtle Island (North America). At times in history, it was explicit, but more often than not, it has been carried out through policies and systems intentionally designed to subjugate Native people. Many of those systems still persist today and are a detriment to Native livelihood, well-being, and ultimate existence.
