Episode 141: Rev. Dr. Christopher Carter and The Spirit of Soul Food

The Checkout dives into the connections between Black Liberation Theology, ethical food systems, animal agriculture and the relationships between Blacks and Jews with the groundbreaking scholar and theologian Rev. Dr. Christopher Carter.

From https://www.sandiego.edu/directory/biography.php?profile_id=840 : Christopher Carter’s teaching and research focuses on philosophical and theological ethics, Black and Womanist theological ethics, environmental ethics, and animals and religion. He approaches religious studies as a liberation ethicist committed to exploring how the moral economy of U.S. religious thought and culture impact the everyday lives of marginalized populations, particularly African American and Latino/a communities. He is active in the leadership of the American Academy of Religion where he serves as a steering committee member of both the Religion and Ecology and the Animals and Religion Group. Professor Carter is also a pastor within the United Methodist Church and currently serves as an assistant pastor at Pacific Beach United Methodist Church.

From https://www.drchristophercarter.com : “My research, writing, and activism center on racial justice. Most of my work examines the environmental injustices experienced by Black, Indigenous, and other peoples of color.

I believe that food and animal agriculture plays a critical role in the marginalization of Black, Indigenous, and Latinx people. The food we eat, the air we breathe, and the land on which we work suffer from environmental exploitation.

But I know that there is another way and my goal is to help us chart that path. My writing examines how marginalized communities could subvert industrial agriculture and create food sovereign communities in order to save ourselves and hopefully our planet.”
